Ask for Greater Works

John, the fisherman made prophet, was reclining at the table with Jesus and the others on the night before Jesus’ crucifixion. He records the dialogue with great interest as Jesus interacts with first Judas, then Peter, then Thomas, and finally Philip.

To Judas, Jesus said, “That which you do; do quickly.”

To Peter, Jesus said, “Surely you will deny me three times before dawn.”

To Thomas, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father but by me.”

To Philip, Jesus said, “He who believes in me shall do the works that I do, and greater works than these shall he do because I go to my Father.”

Then, He said to them all, “And whatever you ask, in my name, that I will do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.”

And, again, He said, “If you ask anything in my name, I will do it.”

To whom did He say it? To those who believe. And in what context did He say it? He said it in the context of greater works.

Each morning, I sit before the Lord with my day-timer and cell phone. I pray in the Spirit until He gives me things to pray about. It is amazing how He can lead me through the events of a month or year and put specific things on my heart for which to pray. Often a friend will come to mind and, after prayer, I shoot them a quick email or text. It is in these times that I ask for those things that are thought to be impossible. Through the day, I record His answers as time after time He does the thing I cannot do.

I believe. And I am confident that when I ask according to His revealed will of greater works, He hears me and when He hears me, He gives me what I need or does what needs to be done to accomplish His will.

Try it today. Make the time to pray.
