"Faith Without Cement is Dead"

I love this quote. I wish that I had come up with it. That person took many difficult, challenging, and dividing concepts and simplified them into five words. I envision him making weekend trips to rebuild New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, or building homes for squatters in the ghettos of Guatemala, or perhaps he was the one drivingnails into studs in the basement of your church so that you could have a children’s ministry. Or maybe he just really likes to read the children’s book The Three Little Pigs.

However he came to the statement, it’s a statement on the reality of how faith works. We serve a faithful God, who continues to shower us with blessings and opportunities so long as we live our lives for him. In the middle of these blessings and opportunities are temptations to take our focus off of him and to live on our own strengths and resources and abilities. I can tell you from first-hand experience that I get tired, I feel broken, and I end up pretty confused when I rely on myself. I can say that for my personal life, my time spent with my family, and also in ministry. Many times, even in ministry, I’ve lost focus of the King of Kings and the Lord of Lords, and I’ve replaced his power, his blessings, and his abundance with my limitations. When I’ve done that, I’ve found myself with neither faith nor cement and a lot of frustration and challenge. Thank God for his faithfulness

, grace, and strength to overcome through faith.Today in Cambodia, cement is mixing the foundation of faith with the hope of a new generation, and the first buildings exposing truths to the possibilities in Christ. Right now I need your help. Please help me. If you are an educator I would like to invite you to please come for a two week or one month educational investment trip into the children who BC Arise serves, who are currently enrolled in the 488 public schools that have been opened to us. If you are a generous person, please stand with us financially by committing $100 for the next year and becoming a member of the Team 217 program. If you are a genuine person of prayer, please put this project on your prayer wall and begin to pray for us by name and by location on a daily basis.I have faith in God to accomplish the BC Arise program. I believe that many of you have the same faith, and together we become the cement of God who places concrete truths into desperate people. Thank you for your love and support.

A God of Love

“Vast” is defined in the plains of India, “crowded” in her city streets. Home to 1.3 billion people and birthplace of four major religions, what happens in India affects the entire world. As it has developed in the 5,000 years since its birth on the banks if the Indus, India has become a burgeoning center for development in education, science, and medicine. The sons and daughters of India have traveled throughout the earth bringing the Indian penchant for quality education into many nations.India became the world’s eighth fastest growing economy in 2015, while developing industry in medical technology and transportation. The birthplace of four of the world’s religions, these devout souls haveremained aloof to the humble claims of Christ. Their calendar and daily life are regulated by their faith to a religious system so intrinsic as to direct diet and deportment. They live and breathe their faith. Literature and art, societal norms and marital customs weave a web of wonder as somber statues stare into staggering souls. Fear is the ruler of night and day.“You need to tell them about love. They have never heard of the love of Jesus,” Rajiv said. Rajiv is a retired accountant, and though he had spent his career as an accountant in Hong Kong, he was and is a true son of India who was now making his first mission trip back to his native land. His instruction was wonderful as he had just translated for me while we shared the Lord with a group of young people.“They are taught to be fearful of all times and things,” he reminded me. “Tell them there is a true God who is love, and that He loves them. Cause them to understand the simplest expression of that love in Jesus, and they will want Him.”We continued sharing Jesus every day and he was right. People had never heard of a God of love. Religion is common to them: sacrifice and retribution are their daily bread. But when they understand that God loved them so much He gave His only begotten Son for them, they come alive with thanks and appreciation.I first went to India in 1983. Now, 33 years later, I find myself with a Mexican co-leader serving a group of Malaysian Chinese to teach Indian pastors about the love of the Father. If God is love, and His words and actions are one, then the essence of every word God speaks is love. This is what we need to know, and in this we need to grow and to be assured. You can come with us if you would like, May 9 through May 26, and the cost is airfare plus $100 per day. Because the visa application process takes some time, please let us know immediately if you are interested. When we are assured, then they shall be. Please keep us in prayer as we again travel to India. We want them to know and to be touched by the love of the Father.

Spread the Word

This month has been amazing. In Cambodia, children are being brought into a rental home while the permanent facility is being built in Pailin. 26 children have been brought in, data gathered and entered, and matched and sent to sponsors. How has this happened?Bread of Life Christian Church in Chino, Calif., is not only building the home, but they have also stirred the hearts of their members to sponsor children at that home. This is how we have sponsors for these 26 children so quickly. It is a great joy to me to see so many children sponsored. I anxiously await the day when I can say that we have sponsors for the 163 children/youth in Cambodia, India, Myanmar, and Nepal who are waiting for that person, family, or group that will specifically pray for them, help provide for their physical needs, and walk with them spiritually. Some only need financial sponsorship for a few months, while others will be at the children’s home for years to come. All of them need prayer support. I am so grateful and praise God for the 279 worldwide sponsors who come through our office for sponsorship. These 279 individuals, families, companies, churches, or groups are currently supporting 413 children at the homes in Cambodia, India, Myanmar, and Nepal. That is 413 lives permanently changed. We are in the beginning of a huge growth within Raising Kids. Between building new homes in Cambodia, the expansion to a second location last year in Myanmar, the addition of Mendies Haven in Nepal this year, and future addition of other homes and other countries, we will see many new children coming in for years to come.We will need just as many sponsors. Please pray with us for the administrative, financial, and personnel needs to be met as this growth happens. My goal is to continually improve the quality of the Raising Kids program, even as it grows in numbers.I have been a child sponsor through Raising Kids since 2003, before I became part of SEAPC staff. I have some who have grown up and are now adults living on their own. I have others who have been at the children’s home for quite a while and will still be there for a while. I try to encourage other people to sponsor whenever I can. I speak with family, friends, and YOU about sponsoring, because I have been able to personally see how the children are affected by it.Are you one of our 279 sponsors? Do you share about sponsorship with your family, friends, coworkers, clients, customers, church, and others? Do you need some tools to help? We have sponsorship brochures and other items that can help you. Just contact our office and let us know what you need.We recently redesigned the sponsorship brochure. The young man in the brochure, Matthew, has been with us for 11 years. His story before coming to the children’s home is heart wrenching, but God brought him to the children’s home and his life completely changed. Yes, he has struggled, but now he is 20 years old and going to graphic design school to prepare for his future. Very soon, he will be out on his own; an example to his country of what can happen to someone’s life when they are given love and hope.Do you want to become a child sponsor through Raising Kids? It’s easy to do. Just email me at raisingkids@seapc.org or call me at 412-826-9063. We have children who are waiting for you to pray for them and so they can pray for you, too.

68 Words to Change Your World

It was a dusty day in the dried out rice paddy. We had come to ask the Lord to bless this impoverished people. Our team of four removed our hats, bowed our heads, and began to pray. Pouring out our heartfelt request, we searched for words to express our grief at the impoverished plight of the people around us. Land mines and killing fields had replaced the abundance they had once known. From these fields sprung forth a school, high school, and computer center. Faith without cement is dead. Faith calls forth the provision of the Lord. He is the author and finisher of our faith. Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things unseen. As the buildings began to rise, and the students to flourish, we asked the Lord, “What manner of prayer shall we teach these young people?” His reply was, “The prayer you learned as the anchor for your faith.”And so it was that the 68 words that will change your world were introduced into the public school of Rongko Cambodia. A school and eight villages that have become a model to the province in which they are found. We downloaded the prayer from the Internet. We did not teach it, but simply said that it would be offered to every student and teacher at the beginning of each school day. We printed it and laminated the pages to prevent wear and tear.

Our Father who is in Heaven, holy is Your name.

Your Kingdom come Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors,

And do not lead us into temptation

But deliver us from the evil one.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.

Amen

“You mean that 4,000 Buddhist children repeating a prayer changed their lives?” That is exactly what happened. The parents wanted copies so we made them and sent them home. We trained 10 full time pastors to teach about the Father in heaven and the region was transformed. We have the top students in the nation, the best rice, no sickness, and lots of faith in our Heavenly Father. Try it.

A View from the Front Lines

Greetings from the Tutwilers in Serai Sisophon, Banteay Meanchey province, Cambodia.First, let’s start with a little background on Banteay Meanchey province. During the Cambodian Civil Wars of the 1970s and 1980s, Banteay Meanchey province was on the front lines of much of the fighting, and as a result it is one of the three most heavily mined provinces in Cambodia. With an economy based on agriculture, and few jobs available, poverty rules in this province. The graduation rate is lower than 10 percent, while the high school dropout rate is over 25 percent, with most students dropping out to illegally go to Thailand to work as unskilled laborers. The Lord can turn this around! In Isaiah 61:1-3, the Lord promises beauty from the ashes. What is Banteay Meanchey Arise (BC Arise)? Let’s be perfectly clear on what it is not: it is not another program in the tourist areas or big cities, and it is not a social or welfare program. Rather, it is a get-down-in-the-trenches, grass roots partnership between the Cambodian government, the Ministry of Education, and you, the sponsors, the faithful promoters of the Kingdom of God, with SEAPC facilitating the project. BC Arise is a multi-faceted, province-wide approach to bring the Kingdom of God to Banteay Meanchey, with all facets and phases going full blast at the same time. BC Arise is hard work, and it is spiritually and financially intense! What will BC Arise do? It will bring better education, it will bring better graduation rates, it will bring jobs and business startups; it will bring water, light, truth, and prayer; it will bring the Word of God, and it will bring real and lasting change through Judeo-Christian principles. It will help to alleviate poverty and thus affect the human and sex trafficking industries that are so prevalent in this province. It will bring salvation and souls. It will bring hope, and it will change lives, but most of all it will bring Jesus and all He stands for into the heart of a broken and hurting Buddhist people. Are you on board, yet? This is a not a quick stab in the wind, but a long-term game changer for the Kingdom of God.For Phase 1, we are trusting in God to provide the funding to build nine technology and skill training

centers. Teaching in these centers will cover computer technology, English, and job and entrepreneur skills such as hotel management, small business development, and food preparation and processing. Out of the nine sites picked, we have two buildings with the land prepared; the foundations have been set and poured in Preash Netpreash and Phnom Srok districts. We are building the technology and skills centers at the high school district level in the villages, where the people live, in order to give them easy access to the training.

Troy and Lauren Kurz

Phase 2 is teacher training at the high school level at each of the nine districts. For this phase, we have had the privilege of hosting Troy and Lauren Kurz and Rick and Suzanne Wells. The Kurzes gave a crash course in health and emergency medical training to over 450 high school teachers in the nine high school distric

Rick and Suzanne Wells

ts and 200 Meanchey University students. During their time here, Professors Rick and Suzanne Wells taught educational learning and teaching techniques at the same districts. Both the Kurzes and the Wellses prayed with and over the teachers and the districts.Phase 3 is equipping Meanchey University in Banteay Meanchey province. Cecilia Po and Faith Toomey are long-term missionaries teaching both classes and workshops including resume building, English, plant biotechnology, microbiology, applied linguistics, and medical standards at the University, along with prayer and Bible studies, while befriending and establishing relationships with the college staff and students. Phase 4 includes holding baseball and soccer camps and tournaments, to encourage the Cambodian young people to get interested in sports and ultimately stay in school! Justin McGurgan and Morgan Vensel will put on a baseball camp and a soccer camp respectively. While hosting the camps, they will share their faith and pray over the students, while endeavoring to help the Cambodian school districts to create their own soccer leagues and baseball teams.Phase 5 is comprised of guest speakers, workshops, and prayer walking, which has led to guests such as Terry Flynn, Nathan Tsai, and George Ebenezer, just to name a few. We had the privilege of hosting Nathan Tsai of the Tsai family, who has for years helped to organize, promote, and fund education projects in the developing world, touching the lives of thousands of children. George Ebenezer is a precious brother and a former orphan who grew up on the streets of India, whom the Lord has raised up to be a powerful Christian evangelist and motivational speaker. When he spoke at the university, even the president of the university was deeply touched and was fighting back the tears. In summary, the Lord has given us unprecedented favor with the Cambodian government, and they have thrown the door wide open and basically challenged you, the body of Christ, and said, “Show us what your God can do with His Judeo-Christian principles.” How will you respond to the Cambodian government’s challenge to the body of Christ? We need you! We can’t do this by ourselves. Is your area of expertise in food processing, fresh water development, or rural and agriculture development? If you can’t join us for a year, come help us for two or three weeks. If you’re not the “going” type, that’s okay, because the Kingdom needs people gifted in every area, along with the gifts of giving and intercessory prayer. Sign on and partner with us just by giving and praying. Help us make the most of this time of the Lord’s favor in Cambodia, or come and we will help to find a place for you to minister. Make your money and prayers count! Join us!~ Hubert Tutwiler

Celebrating Easter in Cambodia

The Easter season is usually a time when Christians express joy from the knowledge that their Savior conquered death and also in that way delivered forgiveness to the world, including Cambodia. Even still, for many, Easter is simply a vacation time as well as a time for exchanging chocolate eggs and making the most of the start of (hopefully) an early spring. This Easter, due to the recession throughout the country, many individuals are more vulnerable than usual. However, you'll find signs of healing, as people work to cope with their problems. That makes the meaning associated with Easter even more significant, for the joy of the resurrection came soon after Christ confronted the worries and also the trials associated with Holy Week.In the days following the triumphal entry into Jerusalem, Christ seemed to be at his most vulnerable. Throughout the cleansing of the Temple, the weeping over Jerusalem, and the final meals together with friends, Christ knew what would take place over the next few days. In his humanity, Christ must have struggled with the fear and also weakness that it can bring. For those who are struggling with the challenges that come along with modern day existence, the events surrounding Holy Week offer a sense of hope. These worries are usually no less genuine nevertheless, even knowing that there is always hope.Adjustments in life and also the loss of security are usually painful, yet they can also be an opportunity to find that all isn't lost. Easter is a wonderful reminder that despite loss of life, there is resurrection. Christ had to experience horrible suffering for you to start a whole new existence. He had to reduce his own existence and be resurrected on the third day so that he could deliver all of humanity. The truth of the resurrection for Christians is a message of hope and it is one that we are called to share with our friends and neighbors wherever they are. We wish everyone a joyful Easter!~ Pastor Vanna

More to Love

FD1C6220

I had a list of names, but I really didn’t know what to expect. I had only shared a couple of emails with Susan, who is in charge of the home. I knew that we were heading into a reputable place. It has been in Kathmandu, Nepal, for 48 years. Mark and Ellie had known the founder, Elizabeth “Mommy” Mendies, since meeting over 30 years ago. But, I still didn’t know what to expect.Several friendly dogs met us as we drove through the gate. Wearrived at a clean, well taken care of home painted blue and white. There are two buildings on the left with a study area and library under the boys’ rooms and the kitchen and dining area under the girls’ rooms. Directors, Charles and Susan Mendies, live in the boys’ building. Another staff member lives in the girls’ building. There are locations where the children garden. In the center of the property is an area for sitting. Further away and down some steps is a play area. On the right is a tent still standing from after the earthquake last year, which contains prepared emergency supplies in case of another earthquake. A third building houses some other staff and serves as a location for disaster relief supplies that they give out to communities. At first, the children just said “hi.” We hadn’t “officially” been introduced yet, although they already knew Bill Richardson who was with us. After meeting with Charles and Susan to get to know them better and to learn more about the ministry, Susan gave us a tour. As we would meet children, she would introduce us. Many of them were doing chores or studying. Naturally, it didn’t take much for the ice to be broken and for children to start chatting with us. They especially loved Caryn and Courtney, who were there to take photos and write peoples’ stories. Who doesn’t love tall, pretty, young blondes, especially when they have great loving hearts?

FD1C6317

I took time over the next couple of days to speak with each child to learn more about them. From cute little Binda, the youngest at the home; her quiet but smiley brother, Dinesh; Subaraj, who is outgoing and funny; shy Jumuna; Paras who likes to be honorable but doesn’t always think before he acts; to Sabitri, who is the oldest at the home and is known to be very hardworking and responsible, and all of the others, I found a group of 29 kids and teens who are a close-knit, very happy family. The children know that I was there to prepare to find sponsors for them. They are so excited about it. They want to develop one-on-one relationships with someone who is going to pray for them. They also want to see the financial help come to the home to provide for their needs. They love this home and know the financial struggles that have been happening. They are available for sponsorship now. Pray with them and us for sponsors, or consider sponsoring one of them yourself. I guarantee that both you and the child will be greatly blessed.

Giving with Faith and Hope

Officially, SEAPC is a 501(c)3 corporation, also known as a nonprofit organization. However, “faith-based charity” seems to encompass the idea of our ministry much better. Our faith is in the love of Jesus Christ who has commissioned us into all the earth to heal the sick and educate the nations. It is very fulfilling for us to be able to do that through your giving, as well as to offer books that mobilize others to the same calling to which we are called. Another aspect of our “faith base” is the belief that the Lord will bring us in contact with those of like faith who will utilize SEAPC as a way to fulfill their desire to make a difference in people’s lives. We believe that our relationship with you is not an accident. We invite you to allow us to be the extension of your desire to make a significant change in today’s world. We are dedicated to Changing Lives Through Prayer. While the fruit is great, the seeds sown are small. Faithful contributions of reasonable amounts provide the necessary strength for us to reach far beyond human limits. Matthew 10:8b says “Freely you have received; freely give.” Giving is an extension of our gratitude for the blessings that we have received. After you tithe to your local church, please prayerfully consider supporting SEAPC and recommending us to your local church and friends.

The Lord of Nepal

The year was 1722, and Ranajit Malla was a king in Nepal who welcomed missionaries and Nepali Christians to come and live in his kingdom. He proclaimed that these missionaries “are commanded to preach and teach their religion and train our people in Christian religion. Our people can accept that religion without fear. We will not give any trouble to the fathers, and will not give any hindrance to preach the Christianity." Through this, the gospel was given an open door to the people of Nepal. This time of openness lasted until 1769, when all missionaries and Christians were forced to leave Nepal. This policy of the rejection of Christianity from Nepal was declared by King Prithvi Narayan Shah. During this time no foreigners were allowed to enter the country, and it was forbidden for any Christians, whether foreigners or nationals, to live in the country. This was a time of great darkness in Nepal and it became known as a “Closed Land” for the gospel of Jesus Christ for more than 220 years. This lasted until 1990, when democracy was introduced to the country, which changed the country forever. In 1984, there were about 24,000 Christians in all of Nepal, yet today there are an estimated one million believers in the country, scattered throughout 1,500 independent church congregations. What a miracle of church growth!Last April a major earthquake struck the country of Nepal and the church had new opportunities to demonstrate the love of Christ in new ways. The earthquake opened villages to the gospel that have been closed forever. The church pictured on this page is one that is currently meeting in a converted chicken coop. This church’s building was destroyed and the members of the church also lost their homes, but they didn’t give up and forsake the Lord nor the gathering together to fellowship in the Lord. We are helping this church to rebuild their building and homes. This part of Nepal is seeing a great outpouring of the Holy Spirit and freedom to preach the gospel; they are living in a time of blessing, because of all the years of prayer and suffering of the church in Nepal. As we read in Isaiah 58:6, “Is this not the fast that I have chosen: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?” The phrase, “to loose the bonds of wickedness,” always reminds me of what SEAPC is all about. We walk through the nations of the world to see people set free from the bondages of Satan that have held them as prisoners for centuries.During the fall of 1984, I remember standing on top of a Buddhist Stupa on Phulchoki, the highest hill in Kathmandu. We had spent most of the day climbing this hill to prepare for our trek that started the next day. But standing on top of that stupa with Brother Mark Geppert, the Spirit of the Lord stirred up within us and we proclaimed, “Our God reigns and Jesus is Lord of Nepal.” What a powerful time in the Lord as we prayed over the Kathmandu valley. That time of prayer and intercession left its fingerprint on my life and I repeated this on every mountaintop, village, street, and temple/stupa that I could get my feet on top of and proclaim, “Our God reigns and Jesus is Lord of…”We are all called to do the same, just as the Lord told Joshua in Joshua 1:3:“Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given you, as I said to Moses.”

Platforms on Which We Stand

It costs about a million dollars to drill an oil well in Pennsylvania. Part of this cost is the drilling platform. With the platform in place, you can create amazing pressure that will split a seam deep in the earth and the valuable fuel will be released. It costs about $50 per barrel to get this oil and gas out of the ground. With the price of oil where it is today, the platforms stand as ghosts against the grey winter sky. There are 15 viable platforms for social media and new ones are being created each and every day. The communication industry has grown so rapidly that the IPOs stack up in line to gain investor dollars. These communication systems are only as good as the platform they are on. Platforms for visibility, viability, and profitability are an essential in business development. Each message is looking for the best possible platform. In the year 2000, we at SEAPC looked for platforms for relevance for our Christian message. In those days we realized that to be relevant in the global community we had to do more than speak once a week to a basically captive 90-percent Christian audience. Our board members sought the Lord and began to study viable nonprofits to discover the positive and negatives of some of the largest international organizations. Through prayer, we discovered the State of the World Congress, which produced a report identifying the three greatest challenges of the first 100 years of the new millennium. They were health, education, and parenting. To these we added micro-economic development. These have become the four platforms upon which we demonstrate the love of Jesus in practical ways. We heal the sick, educate the unlearned, care for orphaned and abandoned children, and help local entrepreneurs understand the Judeo-Christian ethic that will bring them prosperity instead of poverty. The corners of this platform are evangelism, discipleship, leadership development, and church planting. “Fu,” the Chinese symbol shown here, is the picture God has given us for platforms. The sign on the left is “God” and the sign on the right has one voice speaking from heaven to the field. The field is in four sections. As we celebrate Chinese New Year, you will see this symbol in your favorite restaurant. It is the Chinese character for prosperity. The first mention of a platform in the Bible is found in Nehemiah chapter 8. The Book of the Law has been discovered during the rebuilding of Jerusalem. Nehemiah orders a platform to be built, and Ezra and the elders read from the platform to the people. As they hear God’s word they begin to weep, but Ezra gave them the instruction in Nehemiah 8:10,“Go your way, eat the fat, drink the sweet, and send portions to those for whom nothing is prepared; for this day is holy to our Lord. Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”The South East Asia Prayer Center now has a global platform from which we can proclaim the Word of the Lord to the nations and deliver the portions believers have sent for those for whom nothing is prepared. On each page of these monthly magazines you will hear of the success we are enjoying on these platforms. If you would like to send a portion, or would like to come and perform your God given talent as part of a short term team, or as a special assignment, let us know. You are more than welcome to participate on the platforms.
